Whilst I currently work with brands and product-based businesses to create professional imagery that helps them stand out, I’ve recently been exploring another area of commerical photography that I’ve long been drawn to: food and hospitality photography.
Recently, I attended a specialist food photography workshop with the legendary photographer David Lofus. With a career spanning over three decades he is best known for his collaboration with Jamie Oliver, shooting more than 40 cookbooks and helping to shape a bold, natural style that transformed how food is photographed worldwide. His work has been published internationally across editorial, advertising and publishing. He is widely respected for his instinctive appraoch to light, composition and storytelling. What better teacher could I have chosen than David!
In this hands-on session, David shared his expert techniques for capturing mouth-watering images – from mastering natural light and composition to stying dishes for maximum impact.
Why Food Photography Matters for Businesses
We all know the saying: we eat with our eyes first.
In today’s digital world, strong photography plays a huge role in how customers perceive a food business. Whether someone is browsing a restaurant’s website, scrolling Instagram or deciding where to book for dinner, phtography helps tell the story before they’ve even taken their first bite. As a photographer specialising in brands and businesses, this strategic approach to visual storytelling is something that really resonates with me.

Attending the Food Photography Workshop
The masterclass was held in the Fortnum & Mason ‘Food & Drink Studio’ in Piccadilly, London. This is a space dedicated to the search for unforgettable food and drink experiences.
Throughout the session, we explored:
- working with natural and studio lighting
- food styling techniques
- composition
- storytelling
- creating mood and atmosphere
- capturing details and texture
- photographing dishes from different perspectives
What struck me most was how closely food photography aligns with the work I already do with brands and products: creating images that evoke emotion, tell a story and make people want to learn more.

The Importance of Storytelling in Food Photography
Great food photography is about much more than simply documenting a plate of food. It’s about capturing the personality of a chef, the quality and craftsmanship behind the dishes and the experience customers can expect.
Just as I work with personal brand clients to tell their story through photography, food photography offers the same opportunity to create imagery that feels authentic, aspirational and engaging.

Supporting Local Resturants and Food Businesses
As a local business owner myself, I’m passionate about supporting other independent businesses in the area of Maldon, Chelmsford and wider Essex area. I would love to work with independent resturants, cafes and coffee shops, bakeries, food producers, hospitality venues, product-based food brands and wellness and nutrition businesses.
Whether creating content for social media, websites, menus, marketing campaigns, or PR opportunities, professional photography can help businesses stand out in an increasingly competitive market.

Continuing to Invest in My Craft
One of my core values as a photographer is continual learning and development. Attending workshops and investing in training allows me to continue refining my skills and ensuring that I can provide the highest quality imagery for my clients.
